Voting For Nader Is NOT Voting For War

I recently read “Nader Announces Pick for Vice President“, and posted this comment (which has been slightly modified to include the voting record of John McCain) to respond to partisan Democrats who blame Ralph Nader for the Iraq War and the prospects of additional war mongering by the Republicans:

“Nader didn’t authorize the invasion of Iraq. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and George W. Bush did. Nader didn’t continue to fund the illegal and immoral war. Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and George W. Bush did. So voting for Nader is not voting for war.

Voting for Obama, Hillary, or McCain is a war vote. It’s a vote for continuing our bloated military budget. Over 50% of our discretionary federal taxes still go to the Department of Defense. Are the Democrats talking about redistributing some of this war money to genuine universal healthcare, science, or education? No way! That would require washing the blood off their hands.

Who has the independence to free us from our dependency on this military industrial complex? Who can seriously elevate the public discourse and challenge our assumptions about American power? At the moment, I only see one serious presidential candidate: Ralph Nader.”

Obama, Hillary, and John McCain share a similar voting record when it comes to funding an illegal and immoral war, a record which is not shared by Ralph Nader and many other pro-peace candidates, like Mike Gravel, Dennis Kucinich, and Ron Paul.

Again, I understand what you are saying. But our country is just not going to make that leap to the “far left” of Ralph Nader. Isn’t it better to take a few steps left (Obama) then to continue down the same path we are on now? I do believe we can make it to a truly progressive place in this country - but we will not do it all at once. To me that’s just… it’s just not going to happen. We should be more realistic. For example - I would love for Obama to select Kucinich as his VP… But I think it would be a horrible choice politically so… You know, you have to win to do anything. I think to win the war we have to win a lot of battles on the way. There’s no way we’re going to go from Bush to Nader. It’s just not going to happen.

In the mean time supreme court justices are being picked by conservatives… If Gore were prez instead of Bush we’d have 2 less conservative judges on the SC. You dont think thats important? McCain could select as many as THREE more SC judges. These guys make our laws! It’s extremely important. If we are ever going to be the country that we can be, we have to start moving there now. 4 more years of Bush policies will further destroy our country’s chances of ever moving left. This may be our last chance. I beg of Nader supporters to get behind Obama. PLEASE!
